Can You Imagine??

Over the past few years, the Mercyme song “I Can Only Imagine” has been an extremely popular song in both the Christian and secular music scenes. Many people see it as a song of joy, rapture, and of hope for the life after death. The fact that we don’t really know what it is going to be like when we get to Heaven and see Jesus face to face is just so mind boggling that we don’t know what we will do. Will I dance for you Jesus…stand in Your presence… or in awe of You be still? There have been touching times that I have heard the song played, or sung by a person I think is better than the original… huhmmm…Curtis. There have truly been times of refreshing that I have been lost in the presence of God listening to the words of the song and thought, “Wow, that just about describes how its going to be when we get to heaven.”

Yeah, I’d say that’s all over now. After the 2,367th round of Mercyme playing, Rev. So-and-so, thinking an opera version is better than the first, or a ladies duet with cheesy grins singing so "carefree", or the acap version (that's a treat!), or hearing a poor little granddaughter that someone told could sing, search for the right note while Mercyme sings “back-up”; MERCY ME, I’ve had ENOUGH!!

Every time I hear the song now, I think to myself, “I can only imagine a funeral without this song” and just keep telling myself, "This too shall pass." And it does… until the next family comes in and I have to act as if THEIR idea of the “perfect song” is just ever so original, smile, and say, “I’ll make certain it is played.” (UGH!)

If you love this song, great, I’m sorry if I’ve offended you, and know that I’ll smile at you when you want it played too. I just needed to vent a bit after an afternoon “butchering” of the song once more. 2,368...

Actually I want "Ain't no grave gonna hold my body down" (whatever the title is) sung in the way that only Apostolics can sing it! Hmmm...maybe that should be the title of the message preached at my fun-er-al! I want lots of celebration, even if it's just cause ya finally got rid of me!!!

Lynn, I don't think that "I Can Only Imagine" is as bad as having to hear "Go Rest High On That Mountain" (or as Daddy called it, "Go Rest Ye High" where did that come from?)....Anyway, I HATE that song, VERY OVER USED!
