Oh the Smell!!

Today was a semi productive day at work. It's been one of those quiet times that we all go through as funeral homes when you wonder if you'll ever work another funeral again. Good for the public, bad for business... anyway, today has been one of those. So, I found something to occupy my time. I knew that since we haven't had any chapel services lately that we would have a few more "creatures" taking up residence. I went down there this afternoon with a broom and dustpan, knowing that if there were any small little insects, I'd find'em and brush them away to their final resting place.
What I found was extremely overwhelming to say the least! For those who don't live in Texas and have never experienced the "Plague of Crickets", well, you've missed out! What I found was well into the thousands of little dead and alive crickets, either laying with all six legs raised high, deader than a doornail, or alive and running in circles due to some unfortunate accident leaving them with one back leg. I found myself wondering why crickets legs just fall off? It's not like they are old or out of shape, they're just a couple hours to days old. Did I mention the smell? Well, it was one of those where you don't want to open your mouth because it feels as if the putridness will coat your teeth kind of smells.
It took me every bit of 2 hours to just sweep them all into a pile. I was going to take a picture but couldn't bare to be with these fallen foe any longer. They now rest in peace in the dumpster at the back of the building. May they all find their way to cricket heaven where they will enjoy six legs, never to fall off again! Almost touching just thinking about it.

-approved by Farley Wells, CMDI who is running in circles due to his own unfortunate accident.

I know that smell well! I remember driving over them and hearing them crunch too!
